Why Barnard Castle homeowners choose Priory.
Barnard Castle and Teesdale are unlike our urban patches. Stone-built cottages, farmhouse plots, exposed hillsides and old field-drain systems all shape the work here. We choose paving palettes and sub-base specs to suit — natural stone often reads better than concrete blocks against a stone cottage frontage.
From our yard to your door
About 25 minutes west of our Darlington yard, up the A67 — Teesdale is a regular working patch.

Local property knowledge
We know Teesdale properties. Older Barney cottages with generous stone walling call for Indian sandstone and slate rather than modern concrete blocks. Farmhouse plots often have historic field drains beneath the driveway line that must be respected, not cut through.
What Barnard Castle customers most often ask us to do:
- Indian sandstone and slate patios for stone cottages in the town centre and along the Galgate.
- Block and gravel driveways for farmhouse plots across Lartington, Whorlton, Cotherstone and Startforth.
- Full garden makeovers and drystone-look retaining walls on sloping plots above the Tees.
- Sleeper raised beds and pergolas on gardens with generous outlooks toward the moors.
- Robust, cold-tolerant materials specified for exposed hillside plots.

The things we plan for in Barnard Castle that inexperienced installers miss.
Rural Teesdale has its own set of considerations most urban installers don't plan for — exposed weather, cold winters, historic drainage and stone-built structures that need sympathetic materials.
Exposed cold winters
Teesdale sees harder frosts than most of the North East. Cheap materials — poor-quality sandstones, thin-cast concrete slabs, aromatic (non-UV) resin — fail visibly here within 2–3 winters. We specify frost-tested stone and UV-stable resin.
Historic drainage under old drives
Farmhouse and cottage plots often have old land drains and stone-lined culverts under the driveway line. We probe at survey and respect these rather than cutting straight through — cheap installers cause flooding downstream.
Stone frontages need matching palettes
Concrete blocks look wrong against stone cottage walls. We recommend Indian sandstone, slate, riven concrete or riven gravel palettes that suit the local architecture, not the cheapest range.
Steep, exposed sloping plots
Plots along the Tees and up towards the Pennines drop sharply. Retaining sleepers, drystone-effect walls and integrated drainage are usually needed — designed in at survey rather than tacked on later.
Same clear process, every job.
